It is not hard to see why with SUVs giving you more ground clearance plus the elevated driving position is a highlight. For 2024, SUVs showed a more dominant side with staking a claim in the best selling cars of India and knocking off small cars. Look at the best selling cars in India and you see most of them being SUVs. In 2024, we also saw numerous launches which also changed the SUV segment in many ways. Chief of which is the Hyundai Creta which received a big update earlier this year and that immediately placed it at the top of the sales charts. From then on, it has pretty much been one of the best selling cars in India and not just the best selling SUV. In its new form, the Creta has become a sales behemoth and is currently the second largest selling car overall! Not just the new Creta as other SUVs also grabbed the limelight with one of the stars being the Mahindra Thar Roxx. The 5-door version of the Thar was long awaited and it finally came here with record number of bookings along with an aggressive price-tag. It is also a new SUV and not just a Thar with an extra set of doors. Mahindra cleverly positioned the car to go beyond its conventional off-road buyer base and tap into the compact SUV/lifestyle segment. As a result, the Roxx dominated the headlines in 2024. The other big SUV launch was Tata Motors entering the compact SUV segment with the Curvv. The Curvv has been an important car for Tata Motors and has started off with a good first month in terms of sales along with breaking into this heavily congested segment. Crucially, the Curvv comes with both ICE and EV versions which gives more options to EV buyers too in terms of being a compact SUV. Tata Motors also introduced the Punch EV at the starting of the year which joined the electric portfolio but it is built on a different platform altogether with many EV benefits like a frunk. Other notable SUV launches include the XUV 3XO from Mahindra and the Alcazar 3-row SUV from Hyundai while there also being the coupe SUV Basalt from Citroen.
